Christian Ramirez Named North American Soccer League Player of the Week

man of the week

The North American Soccer League (NASL) today announced that Minnesota United FC forward Christian Ramirez was named the NASL Player of the Week for his one goal and one assist performance in United’s 3-1 win over the Fort Lauderdale Strikers last Saturday.

"I just want to first off thank God and my teammates and coaches, because without them welcoming me and believing in me like they have since day one, none of my success so far would be possible," Ramirez said on receiving the award. "It's a humbling feeling to receive Player of the Week honors and I'm thankful for it, but even more thankful that we regained the top of the table and are one step closer to the Spring title."

The 23-year-old Ramirez has excelled since joining Minnesota United and was rewarded with the Player of the Week award for his 25-yard left-footed volley that put Minnesota back on top at 2-1 in the 58th minute. Ramirez also added an assist on his teammate and roommate Miguel Ibarra’s goal in the 70th minute giving United the 3-1 win over the Strikers. Ramirez has been named to the NASL Team of the Week four out of the first five weeks of the 2014 season and currently leads the NASL in scoring with four goals. The Colombian-American forward also claims the top spot in overall points in the NASL with six, thanks to his four goals and two assists.

“We are really proud of him and the guys on our team are also really proud of him," said Minnesota United Head Coach Manny Lagos. "He has come in this season and brought some nice energy and enthusiasm to the group and I think this is a deserved reward for how he has been playing."

The 6’2” Ramirez has filled in admirably this season in place of injured forward, Pablo Campos who led the club in scoring with 13 goals in 2013.

"The goals and the assists are great for our club, but I think it's the other stuff that he is doing on the field that is important. I think that’s why the points are there, but he has really stepped in and given us the ability to continue to play well and the guys have responded and respected the effort he has put in."

Born in Garden Grove, California, the 6'2'' Ramirez finished his college career at Concordia University in Irvine, California with 44 goals and 18 assists. While at Concordia, Ramirez was named National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) First Team All-American in 2012 while recording 23 goals and 6 assists and named the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) 2012 Player of the Year. In 2011 Ramirez was named to the All-GSAC First Team while breaking the school record for points in a single game with five goals and three assists.

Before joining Minnesota in the offseason, Ramirez played with the Charlotte Eagles of the USL PRO in 2013, appearing in 26 matches for Charlotte, playing 1,651 minutes while tallying 12 goals.

First place Minnesota United looks to remain unbeaten at home and atop the NASL standings as it plays its final home match of the 2014 NASL Spring Season this Saturday at National Sports Center Stadium in Blaine, MN.
